Checar e-mail com freqüência pode ser sinal de estresse

Um estudo feito por cientistas britânicos afirma que pessoas que checam seus e-mails com muita freqüência podem estar sofrendo de estresse. O estudo de pesquisadores de universidades da Escócia - um matemático, uma técnica em informática, e um psicólogo - classificou os usuários em três categorias: relaxados, orientados e estressados.

Os "estressados" se sentem pressionados a responder todos os e-mails na medida em que eles chegam e não usam o correio eletrônico como um instrumento útil para a vida pessoal e para o trabalho.

Os "relaxados" olham o e-mail quando bem entendem e não se deixam pressionar por pessoas que estão distantes. Já os "orientados" sentem alguma necessidade de usar o e-mail, sempre respondem às mensagens imediatamente e esperam o mesmo das outras pessoas.

Auto-estima e controle da vida

A pesquisa foi feita com questionários respondidos por 177 pessoas - a maioria em profissões acadêmicas ou que envolvem comunicação e criatividade. Nestas atividades, que em geral requerem bastante concentração, o e-mail tem potencial para ser uma grande fonte de distração.

Entre os entrevistados, 64% disseram checar seus e-mails pelo menos uma vez por hora e 35% afirmaram que olham o correio eletrônico a cada 15 minutos. No entanto, os cientistas acreditam que a freqüência pode ser ainda maior, já que outras pesquisas mostram que muitas pessoas nem percebem mais o ato.

O estudo também analisa a influência que a auto-estima e o controle sobre a própria vida têm nos hábitos de ler e-mails, usando escalas definidas pela psicologia tradicional.

A pesquisa indica que muitas das pessoas que disseram ter pouco controle sobre a própria vida estão na categoria dos "estressados" com e-mail. Já a baixa auto-estima é uma característica mais presente entre os "orientados", aqueles que sentem alguma pressão a olhar seus e-mails.

A pesquisa cita outro estudo feito em 2001, que mostra que, após pararem suas atividades para ler um e-mail, as pessoas demoram, em média, 1 minuto e 4 segundos para lembrar o que estavam fazendo.

"Enquanto essa contínua mudança pode parecer benéfica em termos de se conseguir administrar atividades múltiplas, aumentando assim a produtividade, o lado ruim disso é que o ritmo acelerado de trabalho pode ter efeitos negativos na saúde", diz a pesquisa dos cientistas britânicos. "Existe muita evidência que esse ritmo acelerado está ligado ao estresse."
