O desafio do “Long Tail” no Brasil

Falar em Long Tail está na moda, em todos os setores do mercado. Talvez de maneira mais intensa quando o assunto é search ou link patrocinado.

Já ouvi o termo "Long Tail" ser usado de inúmeras formas e em diferentes ocasiões, muitas vezes de modo equivocado ou simplificado. Mas o que não se ouvi muito é como atingir o famoso “long tail” quando o termos se refere a massa de potencias usuários ou clientes de um determinado mercado.

O termo foi usado pela primeira vez por Chris Anderson em 2004 em um artigo da revista americana Wired. O artigo, por sua vez, rendeu mais tarde o livro The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More (2006) e com certeza muito dinheiro a Chris. A idéia em si é um conceito estatístico antigo, conhecido também como “Pareto Tail”. No entanto, a interpretação do conceito aplicado e verificado no mundo dos negócios é outra estória, esse foi o mérito de Chris.

Em modelos de negócio como o da Amazon.com, o claro entendimento desse conceito faz com que a varejista americana seja uma das mais importantes empresas da atualidade. Um exemplo interessante, que aconteceu de maneira análoga no mercado brasileiro, foi o entendimento de que carregar um grande sortimento de produtos diferentes pode ser uma alavancador de margem, e não um custo adicional de estoque. Para o mercado de e-commerce, a internet viabilizou esse sortimento enorme, o que criou uma pressão nos varejistas tradicionais, pois nos produtos do “long tail” a margem é grande suficiente para que o varejista on line corte suas margens nos produtos mainstream, e assim acabe ganhando mercado. Para um varejista off line carregar dezenas de milhares ou até centenas de milhares de SKUs é praticamente inviável.

Porém nem tudo era maravilha, muitos devem se lembrar da quantidade de empresas de e-commerce que existiam no começo dos anos 2000, tanto aqui como lá fora. A maioria delas não conseguiu executar o conceito, e hoje podemos dizer que o mercado dos “pure players” está totalmente consolidado em alguns poucos e grandes.

Quando falamos em search e links patrocinados devemos aceitar o fato de que o desafio que as e-commerce tiveram em 2000 será, analogamente, o mesmo para as empresas que utilizam search ou LP como fonte de receita de uma ou outra maneira, a execução e a distribuição. No Brasil dos aeroportos e estradas saturados, a execução e a distribuição, mesmo para projetos de internet, acabam sendo um limitador de crescimento do mercado. Enquanto por um lado estas ferramentas viabilizaram a entrada de inúmeras empresas no mundo dos anúncios e do marketing, criando um mercado novo, por outro não conseguiram atingir nem uma fração do mercado total. Isso pode ser uma boa notícia, temos ainda muito que crescer. Mas vale lembrar que no Brasil temos algo como 5 milhões de PMEs (pequenas e médias empresas), e nem 5% tem sequer acesso a internet. Como faremos para incluir esse imenso mercado? Não existe uma única resposta e nem uma que convença. O problema passa por, acesso a computador ou internet, a explicar ao mercado o que é um anúncio patrocinado. Na verdade, mesmo nas grandes empresas ainda é difícil achar pessoas que entendam o que é um anúncio patrocinado, como funciona busca, como se ganha dinheiro com isso etc. Se você então tentar explicar CTR, conversion rate, search volume e outros termos aí a coisa fica preta.

Diferente dos americanos (estou usando-os como bechmark já que foram os criadores do conceito), nós aqui no Brasil somos menos autoditadas ou habituados a auto-serviços, seja por razões culturais ou pela própria dinâmica do nosso mercado. O desafio é fazer valer o conceito do Chris, executá-lo, distribuir o conhecimento, distribuir o produto, chegar aos milhares e milhares de pequenas entidades que formam um mercado, e assim gerar um volume de negócios muitas vezes maior, e outras até mais rentável, que o mercado tradicional. Tem muito dinheiro na mesa para quem conseguir distribuir para a cauda longa do mercado brasileiro.
